THE LIGHTS ARE BACK ON.
Week 1 kicked the Valley back into football mode with Oakdale opening strong, Patterson going to overtime, Hughson putting up 44 and several programs getting an immediate reality check.
You know summer is ending in the 209 when Friday night starts sounding like whistles, marching bands and somebody yelling from three sections away that the referee needs glasses.
Week 1 of the Stanislaus-area football schedule delivered plenty to talk about.
Oakdale starts with a road win
Oakdale opened with a 21-9 win over Sonora, exactly the kind of result Mustang fans want before the schedule starts tightening. Week 2 brings Lincoln of Stockton to Oakdale.
Patterson gets dragged into overtime
Merced edged Patterson 24-21 in overtime, giving the weekend one of its best finishes. Patterson now heads toward a Week 2 matchup at Rosemont while Merced visits Gregori.
Hughson did not ease into the season
Hughson hung 44 on Ceres in its opener. A score like that does not settle an entire season, but it certainly announces what the first film session will look like for both teams.
Next Friday gets interesting fast
The Week 2 board includes Lincoln-Stockton at Oakdale, St. Mary's at Central Catholic, Atwater at Hughson, Merced at Gregori, Los Banos at Hilmar, Gustine at Riverbank and Patterson at Rosemont.
The Gazette will keep the board simple: scores first, hometowns first and enough context to know which games matter next.
